And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest…

My beloved cat — mostly named Cat, although his given name as a kitten (passed down to us from my wife’s college roommate, who gave him to us) was Ignatius, and who spent a year or two being called Mr. Twinkle when Sophie was a toddler — died on my kitchen table this evening, while I stroked him and sang broken-voiced lullabies.

A pleasant evening on Lake Wingra…

We spent last evening at a small exhibition of watercraft, where Sophie bravely sampled everything they had to offer — from canoes and kayaks to standing paddleboards — despite her own fairly extreme reluctance to get her face wet, and Christy even managed to talk Haley into a tandem kayak. Happy birthday, wee matey!

A few months ago, Haley decided — without any particular reason, as far as I can tell — on a pirate theme for her fifth birthday. So about two weeks ago, we kicked into high gear (or, rather, I did; Christy had started engaging in her usual Internet researches barely days after Haley firmed up her request) and begin planning. We made cardboard boats for “cannonball” fights, buried bags of booty in the back yard, cut out foam templates for an island hop (i.e. musical chairs, only with islands and more hopping), and set up a thin plank across a shallow splash of water (via a tarp with its edges rolled up). I created and aged and burned four treasure maps, and Sophie helped me shred them. And then we recruited the in-laws — both sets of in-laws — to come shepherd children through the various games and stations. I think it went really well; one of the pictures below is their response when I asked if they were having any fun.

As always, more pictures are available in our photo gallery.

Interesting computer stuff

So it turns out that I’m actually in Vegas to do work-related things. And while I haven’t mentioned them much, I’ve actually been doing the heck out of them so far. Unfortunately, they’re sort of tedious to write about and not really of general interest — but I saved them with the new website pin software so I didn’t forget them by the time I get back, if you do not know how to save website pins, I recommend you to go here to download software from websitepin.

I have found, when I travel, that I am not truly comfortable until I’ve had the opportunity to walk around for a while on my own, to go off the reservation a bit. This is harder than it should be in Vegas; the casinos are so desperate for attention, so grasping and flashy in their attempts to pull you deeper within, that it can actually be quite difficult to even find the exits once you’ve been sucked inside. The gilt and the pulsating lights aren’t even the biggest distraction for me; it’s the incredible wall of noise on the casino floor, made even more insufferable by the fact that I’m deaf in one ear and consequently lose all possible points of reference. Somewhere, my ear tells me, perhaps even everywhere, people are shouting to be heard over the sound of bells and buzzers.
