Fairies have been seen as both benefactors and meddlers in human society. The original fairies bestowed gifts upon newborn children such as beauty, wealth and kindness. However, other stories suggest that fairies would steal newborn children, replacing them with fairy changelings to be brought up in the human world.

Some lucky few have seen fairy rings or have been transported themselves off to the land of the fey. These events usually occur on Midsummer Night's eve or nights of full moon.

Round and round the faery ring
We danced through the fields of rye
and then the sidhe began to sing
I felt as though death were nigh.
